Chapter Eleven

Caitie wished he would. Wished he could.

It wasn’t often that she snubbed the rules or behaved irresponsibly, especially when that meant someone’s feelings might be hurt. But there were times when being bad felt awfully good. And right now, she would do anything to go back and do it all over again, to relive that night. And she wouldn’t change a single thing.

“I was so nervous, I was trembling,” she told him, throwing gas on the flames. “But then you kissed me and started touching me, and I wanted you so much I forgot all about being nervous.”

“There’s something I should probably tell you about that night,” he said, and something in his tone, in the deep furrow of his brow, sent up a big old red flag.

Her heart skipped a beat, then picked up double time. “What?”

“You know how I told you there were two other girls before you?”

Dread pooled in her belly. “Yeah.”

“Well, I lied.”

He lied? About something that important? How could he?

She was pretty sure she wouldn’t want to know the real number, but she couldn’t stop herself from asking. “So, how many others were there?”

From under his frown, a grin emerged. “There were no others.”

She blinked, certain she’d misunderstood him. “Are you saying it was your first time, too?”

“Yup.”

He had to be joking. “Why would you lie about something like that?”

He lifted one shoulder in a halfhearted shrug. “Pride. Arrogance. Stupidity. Pick one.”

“You’re not kidding? You really were a virgin?”

“I really was.”

“But you were seventeen.”

“So were you.”

“Yes, but...you seemed so...experienced.”

He leaned closer and whispered, “I watched a lot of internet porn.”

She laughed and elbowed him playfully. “You did not.”

He grinned. “Well, maybe not a lot.”

“I thought we were so mature, so worldly, but we didn’t know anything, did we? We were just two stupid kids.”

“Caitie, everyone starts out as a stupid kid.”

“I think I was stupider than most. I was pathologically insecure.”

“Most teenage girls are.”

“No, I’m talking super insecure. From the time we started dating, I woke up every morning thinking that it would be the day you broke up with me.”

“And I woke up every day thinking that you loved me as much as I loved you.”

Oh man, talk about an arrow through the heart. She could actually feel it go in, felt it rip through muscle and lodge deep in her chest. “I thought you were too good for me.”

“Yet here I am seven years later. Still chasing you.”

She sucked in a quiet breath. “Is that what you’re doing?”

“If you won’t come willingly, what other choice do I have?”

If only he knew how much she wanted him. How difficult this was for her, too. “I don’t want to hurt you again, Nate.”

“What makes you think I would let you?”

“I’m not staying in Paradise. I have a life in New York. That’s where I belong.”

“And you think that would be a problem for me? Has it occurred to you that maybe all I want is sex?”

Caitie blinked. No, it had not, but it was an intriguing thought.
